The Dangers of Vaping – A National Institute of Health Study
Recently I heard a podcast in which the host spoke concerning the dangers of vaping while driving. He compared the act to smoking and implied that vaporizers are as bad as smoking marijuana. That is an extreme view that’s shared by many, but I’d Electric Tobacconist like to present the facts on the matter.
To begin with, it’s important to know that vaporizers usually do not contain any harmful chemicals while they’re in use. As with any kind of tobacco use, tobacco and its ingredient tar in e-cigarette materials are bad for your health. But think about vaporizers containing nicotine? Nicotine is still dangerous to your health and really should be avoided no matter what.
So how can vaporizers that contain nicotine be compared to e-books and other electronic cigarette products? Well, nicotine continues to be delivered into the body through the skin, which explains why vaporizers are this type of problem. Nicotine gets absorbed through the lining of the lungs in to the bloodstream, causing short-term respiratory problems including coughing and wheezing. Longer term, it can result in conditions that affect the heart, including clogged arteries and stroke.
In contrast, there has been hardly any research on the dangers of vaporing in comparison to smoking. The only real study published with regards to this subject was conducted by the National Institute of Health, who viewed two groups of teenagers. One group was randomly assigned to use a vaporizer, and the other group to smoke cigars. The vaporizer group didn’t show greater odds of getting cancer than the cigarette group.
So just to clarify, I am not saying that vaporizing tobacco and eating marijuana are equal. But they are both unhealthy means of reaching nicotine addiction. The real dangers of vaping are from inhalation of smoke. Studies show that smokers who use electronic cigarettes to help them quit have a significantly higher death toll than non-smokers.
So what will be the dangers of e-cigarette vapors? In line with the Surgeon General, among the worst toxins contained in vaporized marijuana is formaldehyde. Also, e-cigarettes contain higher degrees of tar and more harmful chemical compounds than ever before. We know that tar is carcinogenic; now we realize that it’s a lot more toxic in mixtures than it really is alone. Tar and other chemicals can cause cancers, not only nicotine poisoning.
The largest danger of E-Cigarettes may very well be long-term contact with inhale nicotine, because it is highly addictive. For anyone who is trying to stop smoking cold turkey, you should strongly consider eliminating your usage immediately and steer clear of any experimentation with low flavored E-Cigarettes and soon you are completely finished with your goal. By cutting out all use of e-cigarettes, you’ll drastically reduce your likelihood of gaining a single, or multiple, cigarettes from your own current habit.
You should also know that a great deal of research has been done on what E-Cigarette vapors affect the heart. Researchers have discovered that smokers who were exposed to high concentrations of nicotine over prolonged intervals developed cardiovascular problems such as atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. E-Cigarettes do not release nicotine directly into the blood stream like combustible cigarettes do, so the build up of chemicals within your body will not directly harm you. However, the chemicals produced by constant E-Cigarette smoking is incredibly dangerous. Studies have shown that long-term E-Cigarette smoking can result in degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cause chemical imbalances in the mind.
In line with the FDA, electronic cigarettes should not be marketed to children beneath the age of 18. Google scholar is an excellent source for the latest medical research on this topic. According to the FDA, electronic cigarettes should not be made available online either. These laws were recently passed by Congress and have yet to be overturned by the Bush administration. There have been conflicting studies on the dangers of E-Cigarette smoking. Most doctors agree that electronic cigarettes should not be made available to people unless they’re harmed and perhaps killed.
Another study performed by the American Cancer Society found that some electric cigarettes contain flavorings which could affect a person’s ability to properly discern whether they are smoking. Google scholar has published an extensive, peer reviewed amicus curiae on the dangers of E-Cigarette flavourings. The amicus curiae was compiled by three top researchers from the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and the American Psychological Association. The amicus curiae indicates that there is “an emerging body of research suggesting that the flavours of electronic cigarettes may contribute to the upsurge in cancer risk for smokers.” Among the flavoring ingredients is menthol, which includes been proven to be extremely addicting, particularly when an individual goes cold turkey and starts inhaling again.
Among the things the amicus indicates is that these studies are mostly observational in nature and they are not made to determine if these claims are in fact true. This is unlike statements made by the CDC, FDA, and several other national institutes who continue steadily to promote the idea that electronic cigarettes are dangerous due to the flavourings they contain.
